Helsingør

On the coastline of North Zealand you'll find Helsingør. Home to Holger Danske, Shakespeare's Hamlet and a rich maritime history, there is plenty of culture to explore in this historic coastal city.

At Kronborg Castle, the famous Danish landmark Holger Danske sits enthroned in the basement, while the rest of the beautiful Renaissance castle offers a fascinating history, not least as home to Shakespeare's Hamlet.

In the 16th century, Kronborg had a reputation as one of the finest castles in the North, where royalty and merchants gathered for magnificent parties and decadent court life. And it is said that it was the glamorous reputation of Kronborg that inspired Shakespeare to write one of his most famous plays.

The North Zealand coastal town's special connection to the sea can be explored at the innovative M/S Maritime Museum, designed by star architect Bjarke Ingels. Here, beautiful contemporary architecture merges with Helsingør’s past as a hub of shipping and trade.

Head into the city's cobbled neighbourhood and visit local artisans in the charming old townhouses. Located by the scenic Øresund, you can also walk along the beautiful coastline and soak in the scenic view while feeling the breeze in your hair.
